Combining speech and gestures enhances neural synchrony in parent-child learning

New research from the University of Iowa reveals that pairing speech with gestures strengthens brain-to-brain connections during problem-solving, offering practical insights for enhancing early learning and parent-child interactions.

As the new school term begins, fresh research from the University of Iowa suggests that the simplest learning aid may be the most effective: parents who pair speech with hand gestures can help children stay more closely aligned at the brain level during problem-solving. According to the study, that combination appears to produce stronger and more sustained parent-child neural synchrony than speech or gesture alone.

The work, published in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, looked at how different kinds of parental scaffolding shape interaction. Scaffolding is the support adults give children as they tackle a task, such as explaining steps, pointing to objects or demonstrating an action. The researchers found that when parents used both words and gestures together, neural synchrony was strongest later in the interaction, suggesting that children may benefit most when verbal and non-verbal cues reinforce one another.

That finding fits with a broader body of developmental neuroscience. Research published in Developmental Science in September found that mothers and their two-year-old children also showed measurable neural synchrony during collaborative play, with brain activity remaining linked even when the pair could not directly see each other. Earlier studies have pointed in the same direction, showing that joint attention cues such as eye contact, pointing and child-directed speech can support shared attention and coordinated brain activity.

The practical lesson for families and teachers is straightforward: learning is not only about time spent together, but about the quality of the interaction. The Iowa findings suggest that combining clear language with visible gestures may give children extra support as they solve problems, follow instructions and make sense of new material, especially as they return to classroom routines.
