Widespread undernutrition and stunting among Pakistani children are deepening due to persistent challenges, environmental disasters, and inadequate coordinated responses, demanding urgent long-term strategies.
Pakistan’s child malnutrition crisis is no longer a short-term emergency but a long-running threat to the country’s human development, according to a report cited by Pakistan Observer. The paper says the country’s National Nutrition Survey 2018 found that 40.2% of children under five were stunted, equal to about 12 million children, while wasting stood at 17.7%. UNICEF’s own summary of the survey likewise says roughly four in 10 young children are stunted, underlining the scale of chronic undernutrition.
The survey data also show how stubborn the problem has been. Pakistan Observer said stunting rose from 41.6% in 2001 to 43.7% in 2011 before easing slightly by 2018, suggesting only limited progress over nearly two decades. UNICEF’s key findings report says the nutrition challenge is not confined to children alone, pointing to wider gaps in diet quality and micronutrient intake across the population, including vitamin A, zinc and vitamin D deficiencies, as well as widespread anaemia.
The effects reach well beyond physical growth. Stunting can limit brain development, weaken school performance and reduce long-term earning potential, making it a drag on both family wellbeing and the wider economy. Pakistan’s nutrition partners estimate that malnutrition and undernutrition cost the country about $17bn a year, according to the report, which argues that the issue demands more than isolated health campaigns and instead requires sustained coordination across government departments.
Recent climate shocks have made the situation worse. Pakistan Observer said the 2025 monsoon floods disrupted healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation services across several provinces, while also damaging crops, food stocks and livelihoods. UNICEF’s flood updates reported major loss of life and displacement, along with heightened risks of diarrhoeal disease from contaminated water. The agency also said in May that four in 10 children aged 12 to 36 months in high-risk areas of seven Pakistani cities had elevated blood-lead levels, and its 2025 annual report said 304,000 children were treated for severe acute malnutrition. Together, the findings paint a picture of a nutrition emergency that is being deepened by poverty, environmental damage and repeated disasters.
