Majority of toddler foods found to be ultraprocessed and failing nutrition standards, study reveals

A new analysis highlights that 81% of toddler foods sold in Austin are ultraprocessed, raising concerns over early dietary exposure and the need for parents to choose simpler, whole-food options for young children.

A new analysis presented at the annual NUTRITION meeting suggests that the toddler food aisle may be dominated by highly processed products, raising fresh questions for parents trying to choose healthier options.

Erin A. Hudson, a recent doctoral graduate at the University of Texas at Austin, and colleagues reviewed nutrition labels for 2,783 toddler foods sold in 21 grocery stores in Austin, Texas. Using the World Health Organization’s Nutrition Profile and Promotion Model, they assessed sugar, sodium, fat and energy density, and also classified products by the NOVA system, which ranks foods from minimally processed to ultraprocessed. The findings were stark: 81% of toddler foods were ultraprocessed, and 49% failed at least one of the nutrition standards.

Sodium was the most common problem, affecting 25% of products, followed by sugar at 17%, energy density at 12% and fat at 11%. Foods that exceeded the sugar threshold were much more likely to be ultraprocessed than minimally processed items, although that pattern did not hold across every nutrient measure. Hudson said some foods with more fat or calories were still minimally processed because the fat came from ingredients such as peanuts or meat rather than from industrial additives.

The results fit a broader body of research showing how early in life children are exposed to ultraprocessed foods. A CDC analysis published this year found ultraprocessed products featured prominently in children’s television programming, while research in France has found similarly high levels of ultraprocessed foods in products marketed to children. For parents, the practical takeaway is straightforward: many toddlers can eat the same basic foods as the rest of the family, prepared in age-appropriate sizes and textures.
