Unlocking the hidden challenges of dyspraxia in autistic individuals

Dyspraxia, often misunderstood as mere clumsiness, impacts millions with broader cognitive and motor difficulties, particularly among autistic people, highlighting the need for greater awareness and tailored support.

Dyspraxia, more formally known as developmental coordination disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain plans and carries out movement. It can make everyday actions such as writing, fastening buttons, catching a ball or keeping balance feel unusually hard work. Healthline and Cleveland Clinic both describe it as a lifelong condition that begins in childhood and can affect both fine and gross motor skills, although its effects are not the same for every person.

The condition is often described too narrowly as clumsiness, but that misses much of the picture. In an essay for Autism Central, Tumi Sotire said: “Dyspraxia affects coordination, yes. But it also affects memory, organization, attention, time management, and the sheer cognitive load of getting through an ordinary day. It affects around 1 in 20 people, making it more common than most people realize.” That wider impact helps explain why dyspraxia can influence learning, confidence and independence as much as physical performance.

Dyspraxia also commonly overlaps with autism. Research cited by Autism Awareness Centre found high rates of motor difficulties among autistic people, and a study indexed by PubMed reported that impaired skilled gestures are consistently seen in children with autism. Autism Awareness Centre says motor problems can affect daily living, participation, physical activity and fall risk, while other reviews note that around 80% of autistic children show some deficits in motor performance and praxis. The overlap can make diagnosis harder, especially because motor skills are not always assessed during autism evaluations.

That difficulty matters because the signs can be easy to miss or misread. Slower, effortful handwriting, problems following multi-step instructions, fatigue, weak spatial awareness and reluctance to join sports or group activities can all point to dyspraxia. In autistic people, those challenges may sit alongside sensory differences, communication difficulties and executive function problems such as planning and sequencing. The result can be a cycle of stress and avoidance, particularly when repeated struggle leads to anxiety, low self-esteem or social withdrawal.

Support is usually practical rather than curative. Healthline and Cleveland Clinic say the condition can be managed with therapies, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy, depending on the person’s needs. Autism Awareness Centre also recommends adapting tasks, using tools such as computers or voice-to-text software, breaking work into smaller steps and building in extra time. For many children and adults, the goal is not to force movement to look typical, but to make daily life easier, safer and less exhausting.
