Emerging studies link heavy and high-potency cannabis use during adolescence to lasting changes in brain regions involved in motivation and reward, raising concerns over long-term cognitive and psychological effects.
New research adds to concerns that cannabis use during the teenage years may shape the developing brain in ways that affect motivation, learning and addiction risk. According to the article’s review of earlier work, adolescence is a period of rapid brain growth, when networks are still being refined and systems linked to reward and decision-making remain especially sensitive to outside influences. The concern is not that every young person who uses cannabis will be harmed, but that repeated exposure during this stage may leave a lasting imprint on brain function.
The latest study looked for indirect signs of dopamine-related activity, using MRI measures of tissue iron rather than direct dopamine scans. Researchers examined 14- to 17-year-olds and compared cannabis use patterns with iron signals in brain regions that are rich in dopamine. They found that teens who used cannabis more often, used larger amounts, spent more time intoxicated or reported more cannabis-related problems tended to show lower tissue iron signals in several of these areas.
The strongest associations were seen in the ventral tegmental area, a key source of dopamine-producing cells, and in the striatum, which helps shape reward processing and habit formation. Lower signals were also seen in the thalamus, especially among adolescents who used high-potency cannabis concentrates. The study controlled for age, sex, alcohol use and nicotine use, and excluded participants with a history of other illicit drug use to narrow the focus on cannabis itself.
The findings fit with broader public-health warnings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cannabis can affect memory, learning, attention, decision-making and reaction time, and notes that the adolescent brain may remain vulnerable until around age 25. The CDC also cites 2022 survey data showing that 30.7% of 12th graders reported cannabis use in the past year, while 6.3% said they had used it daily in the previous 30 days.
Potency may be part of the problem. The article notes that many modern concentrates contain THC levels above 70%, far stronger than traditional flower, and that higher-potency products have been linked in previous research to faster progression towards cannabis use disorder and a greater risk of psychiatric harm. That pattern echoed the new study, in which concentrate use appeared to be more strongly tied to reduced tissue iron signals than flower use.
Still, the researchers cannot prove that cannabis caused the brain differences. Because the study was observational and cross-sectional, it is possible that some teens already had differences in dopamine-related systems before they began using cannabis. Even so, the findings add weight to a growing body of evidence suggesting that adolescence is a uniquely vulnerable time for cannabis exposure, particularly when use is frequent and products are highly potent.
