New emotional regulation strategies show promise for teenagers with ADHD

Innovative approaches to managing emotions in teenagers with ADHD could improve wellbeing and social outcomes, experts reveal, emphasising personalised, flexible strategies alongside sleep and clinical support.

Supporting teenagers with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, to manage emotions better may do more than reduce daily friction at home or school. According to Aja Murray and Amanda Russell of the University of Edinburgh, emotion regulation skills can improve wellbeing, especially because ADHD symptoms often travel with stronger emotional reactions, quicker shifts in mood and a greater risk of peer difficulties. Research cited by the authors also suggests that these challenges can feed into bullying, rejection and lower self-esteem, deepening mental-health pressures over time. Evidence from adolescent studies backs that concern, with one review finding that young people with ADHD reported fewer adaptive ways of handling negative emotions than their peers.

The Edinburgh researchers argue that emotion regulation is not a single skill but a set of habits that can be learned and strengthened. Their suggestions start with acceptance: helping young people notice feelings without shame or self-criticism. They also recommend cognitive reappraisal, which means reframing a situation so it feels less overwhelming, and note that adolescents with ADHD can use it when prompted, even if it is not their instinctive response. Both approaches are widely used in therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy.

The article also highlights rumination, the cycle of repetitive negative thinking that tends to solve nothing and can leave a teenager feeling trapped. Murray and Russell suggest practical steps such as building absorbing activities into the day, spotting high-risk moments and making simple “if…then” plans for when a spiral starts. Grounding exercises can also help bring attention back to the present, while “riding the wave” teaches adolescents to notice emotions and let them pass without acting on them impulsively. That matters because impulsive, emotionally driven behaviour is a common part of ADHD, and a recent study of adolescents found that difficulty recognising emotions and regulating positive feelings was linked to social problems.

Sleep is another key factor. The University of Edinburgh authors point out that better sleep is associated with better emotion control, yet sleep problems are common in adolescents with ADHD. Their advice is straightforward: keep regular bed and wake times, avoid caffeine late in the day, skip naps and use the bed only for sleep. They describe sleep as a process of winding down rather than switching off, with screen-free calming activities helping the body and mind prepare for rest. A recent study also reported that medication treatment normalised emotion dysregulation in adolescents with ADHD, suggesting that emotional support strategies may work best alongside broader clinical care when needed.

Murray and Russell stress that no single strategy suits every teenager. Some may struggle most with labelling feelings, others with impulsive reactions or persistent low mood. They also note that ADHD-related strengths can sometimes be useful: hyperfocus may help with absorption, distractibility can aid redirection away from rumination, and creative thinking may support more balanced reappraisal. The most important point is flexibility. Teens should be encouraged to build a wider toolkit and use the right strategy for the right moment, rather than treating any one approach as universally good or bad. Small, repeated practice, the authors say, can turn these skills into habits that support mental health and broader wellbeing.
