A study of French schoolchildren suggests that classroom pressures, personal outlook and available support all shape how teenagers cope with stress, and that resilience may be a key buffer against burnout.
Researchers followed 525 pupils aged 12 to 18 across one school year in a two-wave observational study published in Frontiers in Psychology. The group included middle and high school students, with just over half identifying as girls. The authors set out to test a school-based version of the job demands-resources model, a framework originally developed for the workplace, and to see whether resilience could help explain differences in pupils’ well-being.
Their analysis found that heavier perceived demands were linked with greater school burnout, while stronger resources and a more optimistic outlook were linked with higher resilience. In turn, resilience predicted better flourishing and greater life satisfaction later in the school year. Burnout, by contrast, was tied to lower life satisfaction, although its link with flourishing was weaker. The model showed an acceptable statistical fit, and the researchers said the indirect effects supported the idea that resources and optimism help students thrive partly by strengthening resilience.
The findings add to a growing body of evidence that school stress is not only about workload but also about whether pupils feel supported and capable of coping. The authors said schools should place more emphasis on building student resources, such as social support and personal strengths, because these may help reduce burnout and improve overall well-being. They also argued that life satisfaction should be treated as a meaningful outcome alongside grades and exam results.
