New research highlights the transformative role of pattern play in early maths development

Emerging studies underscore how simple pattern activities can significantly bolster young children’s understanding of mathematical concepts, paving the way for more intuitive learning pathways.

Parents often assume early maths begins with counting, but a child is already learning something mathematical whenever they notice what repeats, what changes, and what belongs together. That is why pattern play matters. A row of red and blue blocks, a clap-and-stomp game, or a simple rhythm in a song all help young children practise recognising structure before they are ready for formal sums.

The point is not that patterns are a magic route to mathematical ability. Rather, they sit alongside other early numeracy skills such as counting, sorting, comparing, measuring, and understanding shape and space. Early-childhood guidance from organisations such as NAEYC and the NCTM has long treated patterns as part of that wider foundation, and Vanderbilt researchers have also highlighted the link between pattern skills and early maths development.

What makes a pattern educational is not the object itself but the rule beneath it. A child who can continue red-blue-red-blue has not simply noticed colours; they have detected a repeating relationship. That same understanding can carry across materials, whether the sequence uses toy animals, cups, sounds, or movements. Research supports the idea that patterning matters, but it also shows its limits. For toddlers, movement is often the easiest place to start. Clap-stomp-clap-stomp or tap-tap-pause works well because the child can join in without managing small objects or remembering colour names. A walking pattern such as step-big step-big can do the same job. The repetition is simple enough for the child to anticipate, and anticipation is an early sign that they have noticed the rule.

Sometimes a simple description works better than a question at all. Saying, “You used two yellow blocks and then one green block, and you did that again,” gives language to the child’s thinking without turning play into a test.

Families do not need special materials to do this well. Its real strength is that it helps children notice regularity in the world around them. When they begin to spot what repeats, predict what comes next, and explain the rule, they are doing genuine mathematical work.
