Egypt is set to launch a nationwide free immunisation campaign in October 2026 targeting children aged nine months to 10 years, aiming to sustain its measles-free status amid efforts to reach 21 million children across schools and health facilities.
Egypt’s Health and Population Ministry says a national campaign against measles and rubella will begin in October 2026, as part of efforts to keep childhood immunisation coverage high and prevent a return of the diseases.
The campaign will target children aged nine months to 10 years and, according to the ministry, will be free for both Egyptian children and non-Egyptians living in Egypt. Masrawy reported that the drive is expected to reach about 21 million children, with a hotline, 105, set up for public enquiries.
Officials say the vaccine will be given in schools, nurseries, health offices, health units and fixed vaccination points, rather than through door-to-door visits. Parents will not need to present paperwork, but they are being urged to take children to the nearest announced site for immunisation. The ministry has also stressed that the campaign dose does not replace routine childhood vaccines already on the schedule.
Health officials have said the timing is intended to coincide with the start of the 2026/2027 school year so children and students can be reached quickly. According to Al-Ahram’s news portal, the ministry has been coordinating a wider awareness push with government bodies, community institutions and international partners to protect Egypt’s measles-free status.
The ministry also says there are some cases in which the vaccine should be delayed or discussed first with medical staff, including severe allergy to a previous vaccine, certain cancers, chemotherapy, prolonged use of immune-suppressing medicines and some immune system disorders. Parents are being advised to tell healthcare workers about any illness or medication before a child is vaccinated.
