Six US governors are urging the American Academy of Pediatrics to provide families with practical strategies for developing math skills at home, aiming to combat longstanding weaknesses in mathematics achievement among young learners.
Six governors are urging the American Academy of Pediatrics to do for early numeracy what it has long done for reading: give families practical advice on how to build the skill at home. In a letter described by advocacy groups, governors from Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina and Rhode Island argued that young children should be given simple, everyday ways to become comfortable with numbers, patterns and problem-solving.
Their case rests on a growing body of research that links early mathematical development with later academic success. The governors say maths should not be treated as a subject that children either grasp or miss entirely, but as a foundational skill that can and should be developed from the start. They want the academy to offer guidance that would make numeracy part of ordinary family life, much as daily reading is now widely encouraged.
The push comes at a time when national assessment data show persistent weakness in mathematics achievement. The latest National Assessment of Educational Progress results for 12th grade show the average score at its lowest level on record, 3 points below 2019, with 45% of students below the Basic benchmark. Separate NAEP reporting on eighth grade found scores still 8 points below pre-pandemic levels, with only 28% of students reaching proficiency.
The governors’ argument is that early intervention could help prevent those later struggles. They say parents do not need advanced training to support numeracy; everyday activities such as counting steps, comparing sizes, sorting objects and talking about patterns can all reinforce mathematical thinking. The aim is not to turn homes into classrooms, but to make number sense a normal part of childhood, alongside reading aloud and other early learning habits.
That message also has an economic edge. Supporters of earlier numeracy instruction say confidence with numbers affects far more than classroom performance, shaping future options in healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, finance, construction and other fields that depend on measurement, estimation and quantitative reasoning. In that view, the governors’ appeal is less a narrow education proposal than a broader attempt to widen opportunity before children fall behind.
