The UNC School of Education has launched a free, web-based toolkit to help caregivers in Person County prepare young children for kindergarten, offering practical guidance on school readiness, language development, social skills and growing independence. The guide is designed to be colourful and easy to use, with a kindergarten registration section and videos of read-aloud books to support families before children enter school.
According to the UNC School of Education and the Carolina READERS Lab, the Transition to Kindergarten Toolkit was created for caregivers in Person County and funded by Suzanne Laughinghouse Kayne and Richard Kayne. It brings together activities, readiness advice and storybook videos in one place, with the aim of making the move into school less daunting for families and children.
The resource fits into a broader effort in North Carolina to strengthen early learning ahead of kindergarten. State NC Pre-K guidance says school readiness depends on several developmental areas, including social and emotional growth, communication, physical development and early cognitive skills. Person County’s Partnership for Children also points families towards curiosity, persistence, attention and responsibility as part of the readiness process.
The toolkit reflects a wider recognition that preparation for school is about more than letters and numbers. For many caregivers, having one free, accessible guide that combines enrolment information with practical activities and story time materials can make a real difference in the months before a child starts class.
