Research suggests that the age at which children first engage with screens may be more impactful on their cognitive development than total screen time, prompting calls for early moderation and content control.
A new study suggests that the age at which children first spend time on screens may matter as much as, or more than, the total amount of time they use them. Researchers from Inserm and the National University of Singapore found that heavier screen exposure in early childhood was associated with weaker working memory and poorer academic performance later on, adding to growing concern among parents and educators about the developmental impact of smartphones and tablets.
Published in the World Journal of Pediatrics, the research followed 502 children in the Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes birth cohort. The team tracked screen viewing at six different ages and then compared those patterns with school performance at age nine and working-memory skills at about age 10.5. According to the study, screen exposure in infancy, especially at age one, stood out as the strongest marker of later difficulties, while higher use around age six was also linked with worse outcomes.
The findings fit with a wider body of research. A review led by Sheri Madigan at the University of Calgary in 2020, covering 42 studies and nearly 19,000 children, found that greater screen use was generally tied to weaker language skills, although educational content and co-viewing with a caregiver appeared more beneficial. A 2023 review from France also found consistent links between heavier screen exposure and attention problems, particularly in short-term studies, while longer studies often suggested that earlier exposure could predict later difficulties.
More recent work points in the same direction. A study in Frontiers in Public Health reported that excessive screen time was linked with lower academic performance among adolescents, while a separate analysis on physically active youths found that passive viewing, such as television, was more strongly associated with poorer school and social outcomes than active computer use. A 2019 meta-analysis in JAMA Pediatrics likewise found that higher screen media use was associated with lower academic achievement, especially where sustained attention and cognitive control are required.
The researchers caution that the issue is not simply screen time itself, but what replaces it. Time spent on devices can crowd out reading, play and direct interaction with parents and carers, all of which support early development. For families, the message is less about eliminating every screen and more about limiting exposure in the earliest years, choosing content carefully and keeping adults involved where possible.
