As AI becomes an integral part of children’s lives, experts emphasise the need for adult guidance to maximise benefits and minimise risks, emphasising that technology should support, not replace, human relationships.
Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant idea from science fiction. It is already in phones, homes, schools and workplaces, answering questions, generating stories, creating images and delivering information in seconds. That shift has made one issue especially urgent for parents and educators: what happens when AI becomes part of a child’s everyday world?
For children, the change is profound. Earlier generations turned to parents and teachers for answers. Many children today can instead ask a digital assistant for a bedtime story, a fact about animals or a quick explanation of the planets. According to a 2023 World Economic Forum article, generative AI is already widely used by children, which has sharpened debate about both its educational value and its risks. UNICEF has also warned that the technology can support learning and creativity, while raising concerns over misinformation, privacy and the need for stronger critical-thinking skills.
The educational case for AI is clear enough. It can help adults tailor stories, activities and explanations to a child’s interests. It may also support teachers by making lesson planning quicker and by offering more interactive learning materials. Harvard Graduate School of Education has noted that AI is reshaping children’s learning and social lives, and that its value in the classroom depends heavily on how well adults guide its use.
But childhood is not built on information alone. Children learn through conversation, play, trial and error, facial expression and tone of voice. That is why experts continue to stress that AI cannot replace human relationships. The most important influences in early development remain a listening parent, an encouraging teacher, friends at play and a family that talks.
There are also real concerns around privacy, bias and commercial influence. The American Academy of Pediatrics has said parents should talk openly with children about online content and monitor their interactions with AI tools. A study published by MDPI highlighted ethical and privacy risks in early-childhood education, including data collection and the handling of sensitive information. The Heritage Foundation has separately warned that poorly designed digital tools can damage attention and mental health if limits and safeguards are weak.
The practical answer is not fear or blanket refusal. It is guidance. Children should use AI with adults, especially when they are young. They should be encouraged to question answers, understand that machines can be wrong, and connect digital learning to real-world activity, such as planting, drawing or moving like the animals they have just read about. Above all, AI should support human interaction, not replace it. The challenge now is not whether children will encounter this technology, but whether adults will lead that encounter wisely.
