Eye contact triggers neural synchrony that enhances infant language learning

A groundbreaking study reveals that infants only learn an invented language when they see full eye contact, highlighting the crucial role of social cues in early learning and brain synchrony.

Babies may look as if they are paying attention whether or not an adult meets their gaze, but a new study suggests that eye contact is what turns attention into learning. Researchers in the United Kingdom and Singapore found that infants aged 8 to 10 months learned an invented language only when the speaker’s eyes were fully visible, even though they stared at the screen for much the same amount of time in every condition. The work, published in Nature Communications, points to a distinction between passive looking and active learning.

The experiment used three made-up languages built from repeated syllable patterns, each delivered by the same woman on video while her glasses changed from clear to shaded to fully dark. According to the researchers, the babies heard all three language versions but later showed learning only from the one paired with full eye contact. As part of the study, 42 infants in Cambridge and Singapore wore skull caps fitted with electrodes so the team could track brain activity while they watched. The speaker’s own brainwaves had been recorded separately when the videos were made.

What stood out was not just behaviour but brain synchrony. The researchers found that when infants were learning, their brainwaves were more likely to align with those of the speaker, and that this coupling predicted learning more strongly than the infants’ own neural activity. The pattern appeared only when the infants could see the speaker’s eyes. University of Cambridge researcher Kaili Clackson said the babies could appear to be watching closely without actually taking in the information, while senior author Victoria Leong said the infants were not simply passive sponges.

The findings support a growing view in developmental science that social cues help babies decide what matters enough to learn. The researchers note that eye contact is only one of several signals adults use, alongside smiling, pointing and saying a child’s name, and they caution against reading the study as a blanket verdict on screen use or long-term development. The set-up was a short laboratory task using invented languages, not a test of real-world vocabulary, and the sample was modest. Still, the team argues that the study helps explain how social interaction can switch learning on before language itself is visible in behaviour. Reduced eye contact in an infant can also be a reason to seek a paediatric assessment, rather than drawing conclusions at home.
