Research indicates that persistent phonological speech errors, especially sequencing difficulties, can signal future reading challenges, emphasising the importance of early assessment of speech, language, and preliteracy skills.
Many parents worry that a child’s early speech errors will fade quietly before school starts. Often, that is exactly what happens. But research suggests that for a smaller group of children, speech sound difficulties can signal later trouble with early reading, particularly when the errors reflect how the child is organising sounds rather than simply how the mouth is forming them.
The key link is phonological awareness, the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds inside spoken words. That skill sits at the centre of learning to read because children must connect sounds to letters before they can decode print. Studies have shown that children who struggle to blend, segment or sequence sounds are more likely to encounter literacy problems later on, especially if their speech errors persist into the years when reading instruction begins.
Not all speech errors carry the same weight. A lisp or a single mispronounced sound may be an articulation issue, which affects production but does not necessarily point to deeper language trouble. By contrast, phonological errors follow patterns, such as dropping final consonants or simplifying whole sound sequences. Research published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research found that phonological errors, unlike articulation errors, predicted later phonological awareness and literacy outcomes in children followed from ages five and six to ages seven to nine. Sequencing difficulty was the strongest signal of all.
Language development matters just as much. A separate body of research has found that speech sound difficulties and language weaknesses can combine to raise risk, but language impairment is often the stronger predictor of actual reading problems. A systematic review and meta-analysis published by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association reported that children with speech sound difficulties are more likely than their peers to have concurrent language and reading problems, reinforcing the need to look beyond speech production alone.
Timing is important too. Researchers have described a critical period in which speech difficulties are more likely to affect reading: the years when children are moving from oral language to print. That helps explain why a concern noted in kindergarten can become more obvious in first grade, when children are expected to decode words on the page. One study of school-age children receiving speech therapy found that more than a quarter had concomitant word-decoding difficulties, and those identified as at risk at the start of the school year often remained at risk by the end.
For families, the practical message is not to panic, but to look carefully. Around ages five and six, children should be able to hear rhyme, identify initial sounds, blend short sound sequences and connect letters with their sounds. When those skills are weak alongside phonological speech errors, early evaluation matters. Researchers and clinicians alike increasingly recommend assessing speech, language and preliteracy skills together, rather than treating them as separate concerns. That approach gives children the best chance of support before reading difficulties become entrenched.
