UK analysis reveals spouted baby pouches often higher in sugar and lacking in proper textures for weaning

An analysis of UK supermarket products finds that many spouted baby pouches are over-sweetened and do not support infants’ developmental needs, raising concerns about marketing practices and nutrient quality.

Commercial baby foods sold in spouted pouches are often closer to sweet drinks than to the kind of food infants need when they begin weaning, according to an analysis of UK products published in Archives of Disease in Childhood. The researchers said many of the pouches were higher in sugar and lower in nutrient density than breast milk or formula, while also lacking the thicker texture babies need to learn how to chew and swallow solid food.

The study examined products on sale in six large supermarkets in Glasgow in late 2024 and found 298 baby foods from 16 manufacturers. Of these, 178 were spouted pouches. All were labelled for children under 12 months, and about two-thirds were marketed for babies aged six months or younger, despite official advice that solids should not be introduced before around six months. The authors said the disconnect raises questions about whether these products are being presented to parents in a way that matches public-health guidance.

Texture was one of the clearest concerns. Nearly half of the pouches were classed as liquids, compared with just 7% of other baby foods, while only 10% were soft foods. The researchers said this matters because early feeding is not only about nutrition but also about helping infants develop oral-motor skills. They argued that first foods should move from purees to lumpier textures and finger foods, rather than being delivered through a spout that encourages sucking. Similar concerns have been raised in previous reviews and professional statements, which have warned that squeeze pouches can be sugary, low in nutrient density and misleadingly marketed to parents.

On nutrition, the analysis found that the average energy content across the products was only slightly above that of breast milk, while just over half of the spouted pouches had more protein than breast milk. More importantly, 61% had higher sugar levels than breast milk, compared with 8% of other baby foods. Only 14 of the pouches met all of the study’s criteria for a suitable complementary food, while 48 met none. The authors acknowledged limits to the work, including the lack of data on what children actually consume and the fact that iron content was rarely disclosed, but they said regulators should consider whether labelling changes are needed so parents can better distinguish between foods and drinks.
