New research links paternal diet to offspring obesity risk before birth

Emerging studies suggest that a father’s diet and health before conception can influence a child’s risk of obesity and related health conditions, emphasising the importance of including men in early prevention efforts.

Scientists are increasingly finding that obesity risk can begin before birth, shaped not only by a mother’s health but also by a father’s. In a commentary tied to his upcoming talk at Raising the Bar in New Zealand, Dr Ben Albert said research suggests that a father’s junk-food diet may raise the likelihood of obesity in his children, with consequences that can extend into adulthood and increase the chances of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and heart disease. Reviews published in Nature and on PubMed say paternal diet and obesity can influence offspring through sperm-linked biological changes, including epigenetic mechanisms that affect how genes are switched on and off.

The science is still developing, but animal studies have strengthened the case that fathers matter in early development. Research in Scientific Reports found that male rats fed a high-fat diet passed on an obesogenic trait to male and female offspring, along with changes in DNA methylation in sperm and in the young animals’ brain tissue. A separate Nature review described work showing that even brief shifts in paternal diet can reprogramme offspring metabolism through chromatin changes in sperm and embryos. These findings do not prove the same effects in people, but they offer a plausible biological route by which paternal health can influence a child’s future weight.

Albert also places that biology in a wider social context. He argues that weight is rarely just a matter of personal discipline and is often shaped by the cost of food, the availability of healthy options, safe places to exercise, work patterns and education. That view is echoed by a recent narrative review, which says fathers can affect child obesity risk not only through sperm but also through feeding practices, activity levels, parenting style and household conditions such as food insecurity and neighbourhood disadvantage.

The practical message, Albert says, is twofold: people already living with obesity need better treatment, while prevention has to start earlier and reach both parents. He points to newer medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, as well as bariatric surgery, for those who need clinical help, but says healthier environments are essential if obesity rates are to fall over time. Studies on paternal obesity also suggest that diet and exercise before conception may improve sperm quality and reduce risk to future children, strengthening the case for father-inclusive preconception care rather than leaving pregnancy health to mothers alone.
