The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has recommended the complete removal of sugar from Amrutham Nutrimix, prompting a review of its formulation and nutritional guidelines to safeguard children’s health.
The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has told the state’s Women and Child Development department to remove sugar entirely from Amrutham Nutrimix, the low-cost supplement distributed through anganwadis, after raising concern that its current formulation may not be suitable for young children. The commission also wants a high-level panel to look at whether jaggery can replace sugar in small amounts and to assess the recipe on scientific nutritional grounds.
According to the order, the department should also issue age-based instructions on how much of the mix children should receive, in line with Union government guidance. The commission said packaging for children’s food, including Amrutham Nutrimix, should clearly list ingredients, nutritional content and serving quantities so parents and caregivers know exactly what is being given.
The move follows a complaint from a resident of Palakkad, who argued that the supplement contains 20% sugar and could contribute to lifestyle-related illness. The World Health Organisation advises that free sugars should account for less than 10% of daily energy intake, with an even lower level of about 5% offering extra health benefits.
The Women and Child Development director told the commission that Amrutham Nutrimix is made by Kudumbashree units using a formulation developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute in Kasaragod to help meet children’s calorie and protein needs. The department has already been considering a switch from sugar to jaggery, while the commission has asked the WCD director, the commissioner of food safety and the director of health services to examine whether every ingredient in the current formula is appropriate for children’s age and health needs. The commission also wants awareness efforts for anganwadi workers and families through Poshan Tracker or WhatsApp groups, covering preparation, portion sizes and healthy eating habits.
