Jolly Healthcare has introduced KETOJOL 4:1, a ketogenic diet formulation designed for clinical nutrition and paediatric neurology, as interest grows in diet-based support for drug-resistant epilepsy. The company says the product is made under a pharmaceutical manufacturing licence and is intended to give clinicians a more standardised way to deliver a high-fat ketogenic regimen that is usually difficult for families to manage at home.
The launch comes against a backdrop of continuing uncertainty in epilepsy care, especially for children whose seizures do not respond to anti-epileptic drugs. NICE says ketogenic diets remain one of the treatment options for childhood-onset drug-resistant epilepsy, but they require close supervision because of possible side-effects including weight loss, raised cholesterol and gastrointestinal problems. Evidence reviews cited by researchers and Cochrane also suggest that children on ketogenic diets can be significantly more likely to achieve major seizure reduction than those on usual care, although tolerance and dropout remain persistent challenges.
In a statement, Avish Jolly, Jolly Healthcare’s managing director and chief executive, said the company wanted to reduce the practical obstacles that often limit adherence, including complicated calculations, poor palatability and nutritional shortcomings. He said the formula had been developed to improve real-world compliance while preserving strict dietary precision, and noted that it includes inulin, a prebiotic fibre, as well as an enriched micronutrient profile to support digestive tolerance and nutritional needs.
Jolly Healthcare said the product will first be distributed through tertiary hospitals, paediatric neurology centres and specialist dietetic clinics. It has also launched a support programme that includes digital weighing tools accurate to 0.1g and caregiver education on administration. The company says KETOJOL 4:1 is meant to be used only under qualified medical supervision and alongside a clinician’s broader treatment plan.
