Early life sugar restrictions linked to lower cancer risk decades later

Research based on post-war Britain suggests that limited sugar intake during pregnancy and early childhood may significantly reduce risks of various cancers in adulthood, highlighting the long-term impact of early nutrition.

Scientists have found that a lower intake of sugar in the earliest stages of life may shape health many decades later, with people exposed to rationing before birth and in infancy appearing less likely to develop some cancers in adulthood, according to research published in PNAS.

The study took advantage of a natural experiment in post-war Britain. Sugar rationing continued after the Second World War and ended in September 1953, creating a clear split between people who spent their first 1,000 days of life under restriction and those born after supplies became more available. Researchers analysed health records from more than 63,000 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956.

Their findings suggest that the longer sugar was limited during pregnancy and the first two years after birth, the lower the later cancer risk. The clearest association was seen with liver cancer, where the risk was about 69% lower. Breast cancer risk was around 36% lower, and reduced risk was also observed for prostate, colorectal and lung cancers, according to the study and related analyses listed in PubMed.

The research does not prove that sugar alone caused the difference, and the authors frame the work as evidence of a long-term association rather than a simple dietary rule for parents. But the results add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition in the womb and early childhood can influence disease risk across the life course. In the broader paper record, the same research programme has also been linked with slower biological ageing and lower adult cardiometabolic risk.
