High-protein, fibre-rich breakfast options show promise for weight management and blood sugar control

Nutrition experts highlight the benefits of starting the day with a balanced breakfast rich in protein, fibre, and healthy fats, which may help sustain fullness, regulate blood sugar, and support weight loss efforts.

A breakfast built around protein, fibre and healthy fats can do more than keep hunger at bay. According to nutrition specialist Bui Thi Phuong Linh of Tam Anh General Clinic in Ho Chi Minh City, it may also help blunt sharp rises in blood sugar and make it easier to manage weight over time.

Linh said people trying to slim down should put lean protein first at breakfast and keep added sugar and refined starches to a minimum. That approach, she explained, can help prolong fullness through the morning and reduce the urge to snack. Healthline has also reported that a higher-protein breakfast may support weight loss by reducing appetite and helping people avoid overeating later in the day.

Protein-rich options such as eggs, chicken breast, tofu, Greek yoghurt, lean pork and dairy products digest more slowly than many sugary breakfast foods, which can help prevent the mid-morning crash that sends people looking for another snack. Yahoo Health has noted that a breakfast combining protein, fibre and healthy fats can also support steadier blood sugar, while fibre-rich foods slow the absorption of carbohydrates after a meal.

That is why vegetables, fruit and whole grains remain useful parts of a morning meal, even for people watching their weight. They add fibre, water, vitamins and minerals without loading the plate with too many calories. Healthy fats from avocado, olive oil, eggs and oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies can also help make breakfast more satisfying. The key, experts say, is not to cut fat out entirely, but to choose better sources and keep portions sensible.

By contrast, pastries, white bread, white rice and sweet drinks are less useful when the goal is weight control. These foods are quickly absorbed, can push up blood sugar more rapidly and often do not keep a person full for long. A simple meal, such as eggs with greens and whole grains, Greek yoghurt with low-sugar fruit and nuts, or tofu with vegetables, can offer a more balanced start to the day and may, over time, support healthier weight, better metabolic control and a lower risk of chronic disease.
