Walking and exercise boost thinking, with benefits lasting after activity ends

Research from Stanford and Taipei reveals that movement not only clears the mind but also enhances creativity, attention, and mental flexibility, with effects strongest after exercise ends.

A brisk walk, a run or a session in the gym may do more than clear the mind: research suggests it can sharpen it. Studies cited by Stanford University and the American Psychological Association found that people who walked produced more creative responses than those who sat, and that the effect held whether the walking took place indoors or outdoors. The message is simple enough for parents and carers: movement is not just for the body, but for thinking too.

That broad pattern is backed by a 2025 analysis from researchers in Taipei, which brought together 30 meta-analyses covering 383 studies and more than 18,000 participants. The review found that exercise had the clearest impact on attention, but also improved concentration, the ability to ignore distractions and mental flexibility, the capacity to switch tasks or adjust to new demands. Memory also appeared to benefit, although the statistical signal was weaker.

Timing mattered as well. According to the Taiwan-led analysis, the strongest gains appeared when thinking was tested after exercise rather than during it. In other words, the brain may feel most alert once the body has finished working, even if the legs are tired. Earlier experiments, including a 2016 cycling study, also suggested that some aspects of thinking, such as reaction speed, can improve while moderate exercise is still under way.

The benefits are not limitless, however. As effort rises, complex thinking seems to become harder, suggesting that physical strain and demanding mental tasks can compete with one another. Yet the same review found no clear sign that intensity, duration, the type of exercise, age or baseline cognitive ability changed the overall post-exercise effect in a meaningful way. That points to a fairly robust result: many forms of movement can help, and there is no single best workout for the brain.

The longer-term picture is encouraging too. A 2019 meta-analysis suggested that regular exercise may support memory and mental control in older adults, while more recent research has strengthened the case for movement as part of care for depression and anxiety. Evidence for protection against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is more suggestive than definitive, but the overall trend is consistent. If the goal is a clearer head, the science says it may be worth thinking while walking.
