New debate highlights benefits and risks of maturity tracking in youth sport

A review underscores how responsibly monitoring growth and development in young athletes can enhance safety, fairness, and training efficiency, amid concerns over body image and ethics.

A growing debate over how youth sport should monitor children’s development is drawing attention to a basic tension: the same measurements some people see as intrusive may also help protect young athletes from injury, improve training and widen access to talent pathways.

In a narrative review published in the journal Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, researchers argued that tracking growth and maturation can be valuable when it is done for developmental rather than cosmetic purposes. They said standing height, sitting height and body mass can help practitioners estimate biological maturity, identify athletes entering periods of rapid growth and adjust training to match the body’s changing demands.

One of the strongest arguments for the practice is injury prevention. Evidence cited in the review, including a scoping review of youth athletes, suggests that injury risk rises around the adolescent growth spurt, when bones, muscles and coordination are changing quickly. The review said this is particularly relevant in football, where the period during and after peak height velocity appears to be a vulnerable window. Used well, maturation data can help coaches cut back workloads, target strength work and monitor athletes more closely during these high-risk phases.

The authors also said growth and maturity monitoring can make training more individual. Young athletes of the same age can be at very different stages of development, and that matters for how they respond to loading, speed work and recovery. In practice, they argued, this can help coaches avoid overloading less mature players while also preventing more advanced athletes from being under-challenged. The same information may also help teams coordinate training across clubs, academies and private coaches, where athletes can otherwise be exposed to conflicting demands.

Another major argument is fairness. The review said age-group sport often favours early-maturing players, even though late maturers may have equal or greater long-term potential. It pointed to examples in football where late-maturing players can be edged out of academies, as well as to bio-banding, in which athletes are grouped by biological maturity rather than chronological age. Studies across several sports have found that such groupings can create more even contests and give smaller or later-developing athletes a better chance to show technical and tactical ability.

The controversy comes from concerns that weighing children could damage body image or contribute to disordered eating. The review said those worries are real, especially in aesthetic and weight-sensitive sports, but argued that the main risks come from coaching culture, peer pressure and the way information is handled rather than from the measurements themselves. It noted that eating-disorder prevention literature actually includes height and weight in screening, and that structured education about nutrition and healthy development can reduce harmful behaviours.

To minimise harm, the authors proposed five safeguards: educate athletes, parents and coaches; keep data private; make participation voluntary; use trained professionals; and embed growth monitoring within a wider child-centred welfare system. Their case is not that every young athlete must be weighed, but that, where assessment is used responsibly, it can support safety, inclusion and long-term development rather than threaten them.
