Research from Dartmouth University reveals that PlaySmart, a digital game designed as a preventive mental health tool, has demonstrated a modest but sustained reduction in teenage depression scores over a year, highlighting the potential of digital interventions in mental health care for adolescents.
A video game designed at Dartmouth University has shown a modest but lasting effect on teenage depression, according to research published in JAMA Network Open. The game, PlaySmart, was built as a prevention tool rather than a commercial title adapted for therapy, and it was created by researchers at the Geisel School of Medicine’s play2PREVENT laboratory. The findings add a different perspective to the familiar debate over young people, screens and mental health: under the right conditions, digital play may help rather than harm.
The trial enrolled 532 secondary school students aged 16 to 19 from 15 school health programmes in Connecticut. Participants were randomly assigned either to PlaySmart or to ordinary commercial games with no mental health content. The intervention amounted to about five hours of play spread over six weeks, and the researchers followed both groups for a year. PlaySmart presents scenarios drawn from adolescent experience, asking players to spot emotional distress, handle peer pressure and decide when to seek help from an adult or a clinician.
After 12 months, the teenagers who had played PlaySmart recorded lower depression scores on the PHQ-8 questionnaire than those in the control group. Their average score was 5.30, compared with 6.42 in the comparison group, a difference the researchers described as small but statistically significant. The study also found that immediately after the intervention, players were slightly more open to the idea of seeking psychological support. It did not show a meaningful benefit for anxiety.
The authors urged caution, noting that the findings rely on self-reported symptoms, that depression was not the trial’s primary outcome and that the results need replication. Even so, the study suggests a possible role for digital tools in settings where access to care is limited. The model could be especially useful in schools and communities with few mental health professionals, where stigma, shortages of staff or simple uncertainty about when to ask for help can leave many adolescents without support. UNICEF has said that 11% of Argentine teenagers aged 13 to 17 report feeling depressed, while the Pan American Health Organisation has estimated that one in seven adolescents in the Americas has a mental health problem and most do not receive treatment. The Dartmouth team says PlaySmart should be seen as a preventive aid, not a substitute for therapy or psychiatric care.
