Emerging research from Edinburgh and Imperial College challenges traditional views on children’s screen use, emphasising activity type and context over mere duration in assessing impacts on mental health and social skills.
A new analysis from researchers at the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London suggests that the relationship between children’s screen use and later wellbeing is more complicated than simple time limits imply. Drawing on data from the Growing Up in Scotland cohort, the team examined the habits of 3,786 children and tracked how leisure screen use outside school or nursery related to psychosocial development at ages five, ten and 15. Their work, published in JAMA Network Open, found no meaningful link between screen exposure and developmental difficulties at five or ten, and only a limited association at 15, where very heavy electronic gaming was tied to higher difficulty scores.
The findings challenge the idea that all screen activity carries the same risk. The researchers reported that early, high screen use was associated with more difficulties at age ten, but that pattern did not persist over time. They also took account of other factors that could affect the results, including sex, ethnicity, household income and cognitive test scores. By contrast, they found no broad evidence that ordinary use of screens outside formal settings was consistently linked with emotional, behavioural or social problems.
One of the more surprising results involved social media. Among 15-year-olds, those spending more than an hour a day on social platforms were less likely to score in the “above average difficulty” range than peers who used them for shorter periods. The authors suggested this may reflect the way messaging and social networking help young people maintain friendships and feel supported. That interpretation fits with wider research showing that effects vary by activity: a recent review published by MDPI said screen time can have both positive and negative consequences for children’s cognitive, language, physical and social-emotional development, while studies in Nature and elsewhere have linked heavier use with anxiety, depression, behaviour problems and sleep-related harms.
The Edinburgh and London team argued that public health advice should move beyond blunt time caps and focus instead on what children are doing online, whether they are using devices alone or in connection with others, and what screen time may be replacing. That is a notable shift from one-size-fits-all guidance such as the World Health Organization’s recommendation of no more than one hour a day for children under five. The broader evidence base, including systematic reviews in adolescents, increasingly points to a need for more nuanced rules that weigh content, context and age rather than screen exposure alone.
