Emerging research underscores that neurodivergence affects an estimated 15% to 20% of the population, with rising diagnoses and frequent overlaps among conditions highlighting the need for nuanced understanding and inclusive support.
Neurodivergence is not a single diagnosis but a broad term for a range of brain-based differences that can affect learning, attention, communication and movement. Research compiled by New Frontiers says the most widely cited peer-reviewed estimate places the neurodivergent share of the population at about 15% to 20%, although the true figure depends on which conditions are counted. Broader definitions can push the number higher by including additional conditions beyond the core neurodevelopmental group.
Among those core conditions, dyslexia is often described as the most common. New Frontiers says estimates vary from about 5% to 20%, depending on how it is measured, while the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity has put it at roughly one in five people. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is also common, with the National Institute of Mental Health saying it affects 8.7% of U.S. adolescents and 4.4% of adults aged 18 to 44. The CDC has separately reported that 11.4% of U.S. children aged 3 to 17 had ever received an ADHD diagnosis in 2022.
Autism has seen the sharpest rise in identification. The CDC and the National Institute of Mental Health say about 1 in 31 U.S. children aged 8 years, or 3.2%, were identified with autism spectrum disorder in 2022. Both organisations say autism is more common in boys than girls and occurs across racial, ethnic and economic groups. New Frontiers says the long-term increase in identification reflects better screening, broader criteria and greater awareness rather than a simple rise in underlying incidence.
Other neurodivergent conditions are less frequently recognised but still significant. New Frontiers says developmental coordination disorder, also known as dyspraxia, affects about 5% of children, while dyscalculia is estimated to affect 3% to 7% of schoolchildren. Tourette syndrome is less common still, at about 0.3% among U.S. children aged 3 to 17, but New Frontiers says it often appears with other conditions. The CDC also notes that about one in six U.S. children has a developmental disability of some kind.
Overlap is a defining feature of neurodivergence. New Frontiers says co-occurrence is the rule rather than the exception, particularly between autism and ADHD, and between ADHD and learning differences such as dyslexia. The National Institute of Mental Health and the CDC both show that many children and adults have more than one diagnosis, which can complicate identification but also helps explain why single-condition estimates never tell the full story. Taken together, the evidence suggests neurodivergence is far more common than diagnosis counts alone imply.
