A small pilot study suggests that an integrated autism therapy combining behaviour, nutrition, and movement shows promising early results in improving motor skills and reducing stress in children, demanding further research.
A new pilot study suggests that a step-by-step autism therapy programme combining behaviour, nutrition and movement may help some children make gains across several areas of development, although the findings are still preliminary.
Researchers at Constructor University tested the Schmetterling, or Butterfly, programme in a small study of two 5-year-old boys with autism spectrum disorder. According to the paper in the International Journal of Developmental Science, the intervention used short running sessions followed by seated fine-motor tasks such as finger painting and 3D pen work. The researchers also tracked heart rate variability, a measure often used to gauge stress and autonomic nervous system regulation.
The study found improvements in gross and fine motor skills, reduced stress markers and lower autism severity scores on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition. Both children moved from severe symptoms to a mild-to-moderate range by the end of the seven-week intervention, according to the paper. One child, who had already completed the Schmetterling nutritional behaviour intervention for selective eating, appeared to make stronger gains than the other, which the authors say may point to a cumulative effect when behavioural regulation comes first.
That idea fits with earlier work on the same programme. A separate study of the Schmetterling Nutritional Behaviour Intervention in children with selective eating reported substantial increases in food acceptance and large intervention effects in therapist-led and parent-led sessions. Another analysis, described in a preprint summary, suggested the nutritional programme may also improve physiological wellbeing and reduce autism-related symptoms. Together, the studies are part of a broader attempt to build a more integrated treatment model for children whose feeding, sensory, motor and social difficulties often overlap.
The latest paper is still only a proof of concept. With just two participants and a short intervention window, it cannot show whether the approach works broadly or lasts over time. Even so, the authors argue that the results support further testing of the programme in larger trials, particularly because the model is designed to link nutritional regulation, movement therapy and other tailored methods rather than treating each issue in isolation.
