A 2026 study suggests sensory overload may be a key factor behind demand avoidance in autistic youth, prompting a shift in understanding and support strategies for PDA.
A 2026 study has added a new layer to the long-running debate over pathological demand avoidance, suggesting that sensory reactivity may be central to why some autistic children and adolescents resist everyday requests. The paper, published in Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders and summarised by Embrace Autism, found that once anxiety and autistic traits were taken into account, sensory over-reactivity was the only factor that clearly separated autistic participants with PDA from autistic participants without it.
The researchers analysed parent-report data from 795 children and young people aged four to 17, including autistic participants with and without PDA, alongside neurotypical controls. Across the sample, anxiety and autistic characteristics were both linked with greater demand avoidance, echoing earlier work that has proposed intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety as possible drivers of the pattern. A 2016 paper in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry made a similar case, arguing that uncertainty and anxiety may help explain extreme demand avoidance in children and adolescents.
What stood out in the new study was the sensory profile. According to the report, tactile sensitivity and sensory seeking were the strongest unique indicators of the PDA group after other factors were controlled for. That finding points away from a simple model in which the demand itself is the sole problem and towards a more layered sequence in which demands may trigger sensory overload, which then heightens anxiety and leads to avoidance.
That interpretation fits with earlier literature showing that PDA remains a contested concept, but one that has consistently been associated with autism, peer difficulties and marked behavioural difference. A 2013 study found that children identified with PDA showed autistic traits and social difficulties comparable with children on the autism spectrum, while also displaying levels of antisocial behaviour approaching those seen in conduct problems. A later systematic review of 13 studies concluded that the evidence base is still methodologically weak, but also underlined the need for research that captures the views of people with PDA themselves and examines whether the profile is stable over time.
The question of whether PDA exists as a distinct pattern also extends into adulthood. Research published in 2018 examined adult traits associated with PDA and described a constellation that includes resistance to ordinary demands, difficulty with routine and pronounced emotional variation. That broader age range matters, because the latest study involved only children and adolescents, so its findings cannot automatically be applied to adults.
For supporters and families, the practical implication is that reducing demands may not be enough if sensory stress is doing the real damage. The authors suggest that quieter settings, sensory regulation strategies and more individualised environmental adjustments may be more useful than focusing narrowly on compliance. Even so, the new findings do not settle the argument around PDA. They do, however, strengthen the case that what looks like defiance may sometimes be a response to an overwhelmed nervous system rather than refusal for its own sake.
