A recent randomised controlled trial suggests that combining interval-based aerobic exercise with behavioural support may help improve sleep and wellbeing in children with autism spectrum disorder, adding a new dimension to existing interventions.
Children with autism spectrum disorder often struggle with sleep, and that can affect learning, mood and family life. A randomised controlled trial by Lu and colleagues looked at whether a programme combining interval-based aerobic exercise with behavioural support could ease those problems, adding to a growing body of evidence that movement-based interventions may help autistic children sleep better.
The study sits within a wider research area that has increasingly pointed to links between sleep, behaviour and wellbeing in autism. Reviews published in recent years have noted that sleep disturbance is common in autistic children and that poor sleep can be associated with more difficult daytime behaviour, while also placing extra strain on parents’ mental health. At the same time, researchers have found that structured exercise programmes may improve not only sleep but also executive function, social communication and motor skills in some children with autism.
That broader picture helps explain why the Lu study is drawing interest. Exercise is already recognised in sports medicine as something that should be prescribed carefully, with intensity, duration and individual health needs taken into account. In autism research, that same logic is being applied to interventions designed to be both practical and sustainable, especially when they are paired with behavioural strategies that families can carry over at home.
The idea is not that exercise replaces established sleep treatments, but that it may form part of a more flexible approach. Other recent studies have examined parent-led behavioural sleep programmes, telehealth support and cognitive behavioural approaches for insomnia in autistic children, suggesting there is no single fix. The emerging message from the literature is that sleep in autism is often best addressed through a combination of approaches, with exercise increasingly looking like a useful piece of that puzzle.
