New research shows smartphone presence may impair children's attention and cognition

Recent studies link children’s smartphone use and device proximity to attention problems and behavioural difficulties, prompting calls for clearer boundaries and offline routines to support young brain development.

Many parents recognise the pattern: children can seem calm and engaged after time outdoors or with friends, yet restless and hard to reach after long stretches on a phone or computer. The latest instalment of Ostsee-Zeitung’s family newsletter frames that contrast as more than a mood issue, pointing to growing concern that heavy screen use can leave young brains overstimulated and less able to switch attention elsewhere.

Research over recent years has added weight to that worry. A 2023 study published in SAGE found that night-time smartphone use was linked with attention problems and weaker school performance over time. A 2022 review in the journal BMC Psychiatry also associated problematic smartphone use in children and teenagers with behavioural difficulties, lower quality of life and poorer academic outcomes.

More recent work suggests the device itself may matter, even when it is simply nearby. In a 2024 study in Molecular Psychiatry, researchers found that smartphone presence during cognitive tasks reduced frontal theta activity in children, a brain signal linked with attention, and the change was associated with lower scores on attention tests. Earlier research has also raised concerns that heavy parental phone use can interfere with parent-child interaction and may affect children’s executive functions, the mental skills used for planning, focus and self-control.

The practical advice offered in the newsletter is straightforward: set clear limits, use built-in parental controls where needed, and make offline time part of family routine. Experts cited by the publication also stress that digital fascination is a normal part of growing up, and that rules work best when they fit the household and are applied consistently. The wider message is less about banning devices than about reducing overload, especially before bed and during time meant for rest, conversation or concentration.
