A study of people with anorexia nervosa receiving intensive enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy has found that autistic traits are common in this group and may affect how treatment works. The researchers say the findings strengthen the case for clinicians to consider autism-related characteristics when planning care, rather than treating eating disorder symptoms in isolation.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence that anorexia nervosa and autism often overlap. Previous research has suggested shared features such as cognitive rigidity, social difficulties and differences in how internal bodily signals are processed. That overlap matters because anorexia is already a serious condition with potentially life-threatening consequences, and treatment outcomes can vary widely from patient to patient.
The American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 remains the standard reference for diagnosing mental health conditions, including anorexia nervosa, but it does not capture the full range of traits that may shape a patient’s experience of illness. Researchers have increasingly argued that autistic characteristics, even when they do not amount to a formal autism diagnosis, may influence engagement with therapy, response to change and the pace of recovery.
Work on interoception, the ability to sense internal bodily cues such as hunger and fullness, has also helped explain why the two conditions may intersect. Experts in the field say that better measurement and more tailored study designs are needed, while the latest findings point towards a practical conclusion for therapists and families: treatment may be more effective when it is adapted to the person’s communication style, flexibility and sensory needs.
