Experts warn that short-video feeds may disrupt children's brain development and emotional health

Paediatricians and researchers highlight the potential harms of short-form video content on children’s attention, behaviour, sleep, and emotional well-being, urging parents to set boundaries and delay exposure.

Parents worried about endless short-video feeds may be right to pay attention. In an interview published by Loma Linda University Health, Allison Hensley, a paediatrician at Loma Linda University Children’s Health, said short-form clips can affect children’s brains, emotions and behaviour, particularly because they train the mind to expect quick rewards and constant stimulation.

Hensley said the pattern can show up as excessive phone use, trouble sleeping, poor concentration and difficulty sticking with ordinary tasks. She described the effect as more than a habit problem, arguing that repeated bursts of stimulation can disrupt attention, focus and self-control as children’s brains are still developing. A Mayo Clinic Press article makes a similar point, noting that adolescents are especially vulnerable because the prefrontal cortex, which helps govern executive functioning, is still maturing.

Research published in recent reviews points in the same direction, although much of it stops short of proving direct cause and effect. A systematic review of adults aged 18 to 29 found that frequent short-form video use was linked with attention problems, weaker executive functioning and emotional dysregulation. A separate scoping review covering children, adolescents and young adults reported associations with poorer mental health, including anxiety, depression and psychological distress, along with lower concentration and academic productivity.

Hensley said the strongest concern is not just the content itself, but the design of the format. Short videos, she said, condition children to expect rapid switches and instant gratification, which can make slower activities feel harder. She contrasted that with reading, studying and classroom learning, which require sustained attention and are more beneficial for developing brains. Similar concerns appear in other commentary on the subject, which says passive scrolling can be more harmful than active engagement because it can feed social comparison, loneliness and emotional exhaustion.

Sleep is another key issue. Hensley said social media can delay melatonin release and make it harder for children to fall asleep, creating a cycle of irritability, poor focus and worsening emotional health the next day. She said much of the impact is reversible once children reduce or stop using shorts, with attention often improving as the brain adapts to a slower pace. Her advice to parents is straightforward: set limits, keep phones out of the bedroom and switch off screens about an hour before bedtime.
