Research from the University of São Paulo shows that stress during adolescence causes persistent alterations in brain circuits linked to emotion and decision-making, highlighting the importance of early support for vulnerable teenagers.
Stress during adolescence may leave lasting marks on the brain into adulthood, according to research from the Ribeirão Preto Medical School at the University of São Paulo published in Cerebral Cortex. The study adds to evidence that the teenage years are a particularly sensitive phase of brain development, when exposure to strain can shape how key neural circuits work later in life.
The researchers compared rats exposed to stress in adolescence with others stressed as adults. They found that the younger animals showed longer-lasting changes in the medial prefrontal cortex, an area involved in emotion control, decision-making and behaviour. In the adult group, the effects were largely short-lived, suggesting that the same stressor can have very different consequences depending on when it occurs.
In the experiment, the animals were exposed to a protocol combining restraint and mild foot shocks. Weeks later, the scientists saw a persistent rise in activity among excitatory neurons, alongside changes in inhibitory neurons that normally help keep brain activity in balance. They also recorded a lasting drop in gamma oscillations, brain rhythms linked to coordinated communication between neurons and higher cognitive functions. The adult rats, by contrast, showed mainly temporary disruption.
The findings fit with earlier work showing that stress in adolescence can alter prefrontal cortex development and affect neural signalling in circuits tied to emotional processing. Other studies have also linked adolescent stress to changes in the amygdala, another region central to emotion, and to delayed maturation of structures that support inhibitory control. Together, that body of research suggests that stress during this stage can make the brain more vulnerable, especially when combined with genetic risk factors.
The authors stress that the work was carried out in rats and does not mean that stressed teenagers will develop mental illness. But they argue that identifying people who are especially sensitive to stress could help guide earlier support and prevention. In practical terms, the study reinforces a message of interest to parents and caregivers: the adolescent brain is still under construction, and sustained stress may matter long after the immediate pressure has passed.
