A large-scale international study reveals that the early teenage years are a crucial window for identifying mental-health vulnerabilities linked to executive function lapses, with implications for prevention and intervention.
Early adolescence may be the point at which lapses in self-control and mental organisation are most revealing about a young person’s mental-health risks. A study published in Nature Mental Health found that teenagers whose executive function fell further below age-based expectations were more likely to show behavioural and social difficulties, with the link strongest at roughly 11 to 13 years old. The researchers drew on data from 33,622 adolescents in China and then checked the pattern against 11,549 adolescents in the United States.
The work focuses on executive function, the set of mental skills that helps people pause before acting, ignore distractions, hold information in mind and use it to guide behaviour. Two parts of that system were mapped separately: inhibitory control, which underpins the ability to suppress an impulsive response, and working memory, which allows someone to briefly store and manipulate information. The central finding is that these abilities do not move in lockstep through the teenage years.
Rather than simply asking whether older teenagers scored higher than younger ones, the team built developmental charts designed to show what performance typically looks like at each age. According to the earlier medRxiv version of the research, the main sample came from the Adolescent Health Enhancing Long-term Plan, or A-HELP, an ongoing Chinese study running from 2022 to 2027. The researchers used tasks including Go/No-Go tests for inhibition and 1-back and 2-back exercises for working memory, then applied growth-chart-style statistical modelling to work out how far each participant sat above or below the expected range for their age.
That approach showed a split pattern. Inhibitory control continued to mature into late adolescence, while working memory improved earlier and then levelled off. At the same time, differences between individuals narrowed with age, suggesting that teenagers become less variable in these abilities as they get older. The paper, which went online on 17 August 2026, presents those curves as a set of population benchmarks rather than a simple league table of raw test scores.
The mental-health links were most striking among those who underperformed relative to their age group. Across the Chinese cohort, larger shortfalls in executive function were associated with more peer difficulties, more conduct problems, higher hyperactivity or inattention and lower prosocial behaviour. Institutional summaries from the Chinese Institute for Brain Research and the Cui lab said those links weakened later in adolescence, reinforcing the idea that the earliest teen years may be a particularly sensitive period for spotting vulnerability.
That matters because the results suggest that understanding information and controlling impulses do not necessarily mature together. A teenager may be perfectly capable of holding instructions in mind, for example, while still lagging in the ability to stop an unhelpful or risky reaction in the moment. The researchers also tested whether the overall pattern was specific to one country. Using three waves of data from the US Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, collected between 2016 and 2022, they reported convergent results, indicating that the broad developmental trajectory was not confined to the Chinese sample.
The paper was authored by Yang Li, Lirou Tan, Yinan Duan, Xiaoyu Xu and colleagues, with Zaixu Cui as senior author. A post from Cui’s lab said the project involved collaboration with Runsen Chen of Tsinghua University and Tengfei Wang of Zhejiang University, and singled out Li, Tan and Xu among the leading contributors. That institutional trail matters because the study is being presented not as a loose observational finding but as part of a larger effort to create reference standards for adolescent cognitive development.
The researchers and subsequent science coverage alike have urged caution over how those standards are used. The Nature Mental Health paper describes them as benchmarks that may help with age-sensitive identification and prevention, not as a diagnostic rule for individual teenagers. Scienmag and Daily Mental Health News, in explaining the findings, also noted that executive function can be shaped by sleep, stress, education, socioeconomic conditions, physical health and family environment. Even so, the study’s practical message is clear: if schools, clinicians and families want to know when weaker self-regulation is most likely to matter, the window at the start of adolescence may deserve the closest attention.
