Research from Northeastern University uncovers that aerobic fitness and body fat influence children’s inhibitory control in different ways, highlighting separate impacts on brain function and impulsivity.
A new study from Northeastern University suggests that children’s physical fitness and body fat may influence self-control in different ways, adding nuance to the idea that health and brain development are closely linked. The research focused on inhibitory control, the mental skill that helps children pause, ignore distractions and choose a deliberate response rather than acting on impulse.
The team studied about 100 children aged 9 and 10, measuring body composition with a DEXA scan, a method that distinguishes fat, muscle and bone more precisely than body mass index. They also assessed aerobic fitness with a treadmill test and then asked the children to complete computer-based tasks while wearing brain-monitoring caps. According to the study, fitter children generally handled the more difficult tasks better, made fewer mistakes and showed stronger brain activity connected with attention and self-control.
Body fat appeared to matter in a different way. Children with more body fat were more likely to respond impulsively, but that did not translate into better accuracy or better task performance overall. Lead author Kellyn Carlson said the findings suggest aerobic fitness is linked more closely to inhibitory control, while body fat is associated mainly with impulsive responding, indicating that the two factors operate independently rather than simply reflecting overall body size.
The work builds on earlier Northeastern research pointing in a similar direction. In a separate study of more than 200 children aged 8 to 11, researchers reported that lower body fat and higher aerobic fitness were linked with fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression. A 2017 exercise study from the university also found that daily physical activity reduced visceral fat and improved cognitive function in children, with changes in body fat tied to gains in inhibitory control. Taken together, the studies strengthen the case that physical activity may support both mental health and brain development, although the new findings cannot prove that changing fitness or body fat would automatically improve self-control.
