Scottish research challenges fears over screen time impact on adolescent development

A long-term Scottish study finds no consistent link between children’s screen use and emotional or social difficulties, highlighting the importance of family context over screen time limits.

A Scottish study following children from age five into adolescence suggests that screen use is far less straightforward as a predictor of emotional, behavioural and social development than many parents might fear. Published in JAMA Network Open, the analysis found no consistent link between screen time and poorer psychosocial outcomes once family functioning and other background factors were taken into account.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh examined data from the Growing Up in Scotland birth cohort, tracking 3,786 children at age five, 3,126 at age ten and 2,598 at age 15. Screen use rose sharply across childhood: median daily non-school screen time increased from two hours at age five to three hours at age ten, while the share spending at least three hours a day on screens climbed from 25% to 52.4%. By age 15, 28.4% of teenagers were spending three or more hours a day on social media and messaging apps.

The clearest signal in the study came from very heavy gaming. After adjustment for confounding factors, five or more hours a day of gaming was linked with higher odds of elevated difficulties scores at age 15. But the broader picture was mixed. At ages five and ten, screen use was not associated with worse total difficulties scores after adjustment, and some associations that did appear in sensitivity checks did not hold up consistently across other analyses. The researchers also found limited and inconsistent evidence around prosocial development, with some higher screen-use categories linked to lower scores, though not always enough to cross the threshold for concern.

Earlier screen exposure showed some associations with later difficulties, but these did not persist over time. High use at age five was tied to a greater chance of elevated difficulties at age ten, yet that pattern faded by age 15. The authors said the results should not be read as an argument for unrestricted screen use, noting that screens can contribute to problems such as cyberbullying, sedentary behaviour and exposure to harmful content. They also pointed to possible benefits, including learning, information access and social connection. Experts quoted by the University of Edinburgh said the findings underline the importance of family context and broader habits, not just screen time limits, while researchers cautioned that the data were collected before the COVID-19 era and may not fully reflect today’s fast-changing digital environment.
