Researchers reveal that adults' beliefs about children’s development are more structured and culturally universal than expected

A new international study challenges assumptions about how adults perceive the timing of children’s cognitive and behavioural skills, uncovering surprisingly consistent and systematic beliefs across diverse cultures.

Parents and teachers often assume they know when a child should be able to think, remember or understand. But a new study in Psychological Science suggests that many adults share a surprisingly structured, and sometimes mistaken, picture of how the mind develops.

Xianwei Meng, a developmental psychologist at Nagoya University, said these assumptions can shape everyday interactions with children. If adults expect a skill too early, they may judge a child unfairly for not managing it yet. If they assume a child is too young to have a skill, they may miss signs of ability that are already there. The research adds to a growing body of work on folk psychology, the study of how people intuitively understand mental life, and shows that beliefs about children’s minds may be more systematic than scientists had assumed.

According to the paper, Meng and colleagues surveyed hundreds of people in Australia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, the UK and the US, asking when 40 different abilities first emerge. Across countries, participants tended to split mental development into two broad categories. One covered perceptual and experiential capacities such as sensing, feeling and recognising things. The other covered reflective and evaluative abilities such as remembering events, making choices and exercising self-control. The first set was generally seen as appearing early in childhood, while the second was thought to develop later. The researchers said the pattern held despite some cultural differences in how questions were interpreted.

The findings also echoed the long-running nature-versus-nurture debate. In a Japanese sample, abilities seen as more shaped by nurture were more likely to be classed as reflective and evaluative, while those linked more strongly to nature were more often placed in the perceptual-experiential group. That connection suggests many people may be organising their views of children’s minds through a broader theory about what is inherited and what is learned, a line of thinking that fits earlier research showing that cultural context can shape folk reasoning about biology, psychology and ecology.

Meng said the results were unexpected because the team had anticipated more variation between countries. Even so, he cautioned that the study covers only six nations and does not prove the pattern is universal. It also examined general beliefs rather than the specific expectations adults bring to their own children or pupils. That leaves open an important question for education and parenting: whether these intuitive theories help adults respond more carefully to children, or lead them to underestimate what children can already do.
