A new study indicates that a warm and responsive parent-baby relationship in the first months can help mitigate the risk of ADHD associated with maternal inflammation during pregnancy, highlighting the importance of early emotional bonds alongside genetic and environmental factors.
A warm, responsive relationship between parent and baby in the first months of life may help blunt a child’s risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to a study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The findings add to evidence that ADHD is shaped not only by genetics, but also by conditions before birth and by the early caregiving environment.
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University followed more than 300 pregnant women and their children. They measured markers of inflammation in the mothers’ blood during pregnancy, then observed parent-child interactions when the babies were six months old and assessed ADHD symptoms when the children were three. Higher maternal inflammation during pregnancy was linked to a greater risk of later ADHD symptoms, but the effect appeared weaker when early interactions were affectionate and sensitive.
Hanna Gustafsson, a psychiatry researcher at OHSU, said in comments reported by US News that brain development is influenced by the prenatal environment, but it does not stop at birth. She said children’s experiences, family relationships and the wider community continue to shape development across childhood. That broader view matters because inflammation in pregnancy can be associated with infections, diabetes, stress, air pollution and tobacco smoke exposure.
The study fits with a growing body of research suggesting that early emotional development can matter for later mental health. Other work has linked early patterns of negative and positive affect with ADHD symptoms, while separate research has explored digital tools for earlier neurodevelopmental assessment. Taken together, the findings point to a simple but important message for parents and caregivers: nurturing, stable interaction may not prevent every risk, but it can help reduce the impact of early biological vulnerability.
