Online peer mentoring shows promise in reducing anxiety and behavioural issues in young people with learning differences

A study suggests that online peer mentoring may be linked to improved mental health, sleep, and behaviour among young people with learning differences, though causality remains unconfirmed.

A study published in Scientific Reports suggests that online peer mentoring may be linked to lower caregiver-reported anxiety, sleep difficulties and behavioural problems in young people with learning differences, although the researchers stop short of claiming the programme caused those changes.

The work, by Alecia Mercier, Brianna Paquette, Fumiko Hoeft and Caroline G. Richter, examined 40 primary caregivers of mentees aged 10 to 23 who had taken part in Superpower Mentors for between five weeks and two years. Most of the young people had specific learning disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or both. Caregivers were asked to compare their child’s functioning before mentoring with how things had changed since, across 10 areas including anxiety, depression, sleep, executive function and self-esteem.

According to the study, caregivers reported improvement in every one of those areas after mentoring began. The strongest reported gains covered mental health, day-to-day behaviour and sleep, while self-esteem also appeared to rise. The researchers said girls were reported to show sharper drops in depression and sleep problems than boys, although girls started from a higher baseline in those areas.

Even so, the findings should be read with caution. Because the study relied on retrospective caregiver reports and did not include a comparison group, it cannot establish cause and effect. Normal development, outside support or expectations of improvement could all have influenced what caregivers noticed. Still, the results add to a small but growing body of evidence that online mentoring, when built around regular contact and matched pairs, may be a useful support for families navigating learning differences.
