The neurodiversity paradigm offers a simple but consequential shift in how brain differences are understood: conditions such as ADHD, autism and dyslexia are not treated as defects to be eliminated, but as natural variations in human cognition. That framing can be a relief for people who have spent years being told they are simply wrong, lazy or broken. It also matters because the language used around neurodiversity often gets blurred, leaving people unsure whether the term refers to a movement, a diagnosis, a social model or a way of seeing difference.
At its core, the paradigm stands apart from the medical model, which focuses on locating problems inside the individual and reducing them. By contrast, the neurodiversity view argues that much of the difficulty comes from a mismatch between a person’s needs and an environment designed for a narrower range of minds. That distinction is important in schools, workplaces and homes, where support is often more effective when it is built around accommodation rather than correction.
