Research suggests that sensitive and responsive early caregiving can mitigate the risk of ADHD in children exposed to prenatal inflammation, highlighting the importance of nurturing interactions after birth.
Kind and patient parenting may help blunt a child’s later risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to a study reported by HealthDay and carried out by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. The findings add to growing evidence that what happens before birth matters, but that early caregiving can also shape how that risk plays out after a child is born.
The researchers tracked more than 300 pregnant women and their children, measuring inflammation in the second trimester with blood samples and then observing mother-child interactions when the infants were 6 months old. ADHD symptoms were assessed when the children were 3 years old. The study, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, found that higher inflammation during pregnancy was linked to more ADHD symptoms in early childhood, especially when caregiving was less sensitive and responsive.
That fits with earlier research showing that prenatal inflammation can be tied to later ADHD. Studies in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, BMC Medicine and the International Journal of Epidemiology have linked ADHD risk to maternal inflammation, immune-mediated conditions, infection, smoking, hypertension, diabetes and other pregnancy-related health factors. Other work has also connected maternal fever and obesity during pregnancy with greater ADHD risk or more symptoms in children.
Hanna Gustafsson, a psychiatry associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University and the senior researcher on the new study, said the work shows that early life experience matters alongside genetics and prenatal development. Lead researcher Elinor Sullivan said the findings highlight the effect of small, everyday moments of connection, such as responding promptly, speaking in a calm tone and spending time actively engaging with a child. The team now plans to look at ways to reduce inflammation during pregnancy, including fatty acid supplements and mindfulness meditation.
