Finnish study suggests active screen time boosts teenage cognition and challenges traditional views

A groundbreaking Finnish study following children over eight years reveals that active, engaging screen use may enhance cognitive performance in teens, prompting a rethink of dominant warnings about screen time and its effects on young minds.

A Finnish study is challenging the usual warning that more screen time harms young minds. Researchers following children for eight years found that higher use of screens across childhood was associated with better cognitive performance in the teenage years, according to reporting based on the University of Jyväskylä’s work. The findings suggest that what children do on a screen may matter as much as how long they spend there.

The study, published in work covered by ScienceDaily, points to activities that demand active thinking, problem-solving, creativity and learning as possible reasons for the link. It does not argue that unlimited screen use is harmless, but it does suggest that screen time should not be treated as uniformly damaging. The researchers said the key may be balance, with screens used in ways that encourage mental engagement rather than passive viewing.

The picture was more nuanced when it came to physical activity. Among girls, more low-intensity exercise from childhood was linked with better working memory in adolescence. Among boys, greater participation in organised physical activity from childhood through adolescence was associated with stronger working memory. The study also found an unexpected pattern: lower levels of unsupervised physical activity, as reported by participants, were linked with better cognitive processing in the teenage years.

The research drew on the PANIC study, which tracks children’s physical activity and nutrition over time. It followed 124 girls and 136 boys, with an average age of 15.8 years, using questionnaires and devices that measured heart rate and movement. Learning, attention and working memory were assessed with CogState tests. Previous research published in Computers in Human Behavior has also found that different forms of screen use can have different effects, with television and video viewing linked to poorer cognition and video gaming tied to better outcomes. A separate longitudinal study archived by the US National Library of Medicine likewise found that screen time, sedentary behaviour and physical activity all interact in complex ways during childhood and adolescence, underlining that these habits should be considered together rather than in isolation.
