A pioneering Finnish research follow-up suggests that screen use may not be harmful and could even enhance cognitive processing in adolescents, prompting a re-evaluation of current guidelines on children’s digital engagement.
A new Finnish study suggests screen time is not automatically harmful for children’s brains, and may even be linked with better cognitive processing in adolescence. Writing in Pediatric Exercise Science, researchers followed 260 children for eight years, tracking physical activity, sedentary behaviour and screen use from childhood through to their mid-teens. By an average age of nearly 16, more screen time across the study period was associated with stronger cognitive processing.
Lead researcher Petri Jalanko, a doctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä, said in the study’s news release that screen use should not be treated as harmful in itself. The more important question, he suggested, is what children are doing on their screens. He said parents and teachers should steer children towards activities that encourage active thinking, problem-solving, creativity and learning.
The findings on physical activity were less straightforward. Some forms of exercise appeared to support working memory, but overall movement measured through tracking devices did not show a clear link to cognitive processing. Jalanko said the relationship between activity, sedentary time and brain function appears to depend on sex, the type of activity and how it is measured. He added that boys and girls may benefit from different kinds of physical activity when it comes to brain health.
The results add to a wider debate that has produced mixed evidence. Research cited by the National Institutes of Health found that children who played video games for three hours or more a day did better on tests of impulse control and working memory than non-players, although heavier gaming was also tied to more attention problems and depressive symptoms, without reaching clinical significance. By contrast, groups such as Children and Screens and the American Academy of Pediatrics have warned that excessive screen use in early childhood can interfere with language, attention and executive function, especially when it displaces direct interaction, play and sleep. In that context, the Finnish study points less to a simple verdict on screens than to the need for balance and age-appropriate content.
