A Stanford University study indicates that analysing children’s speech patterns may provide a more reliable early indicator of future anxiety and depression than focusing solely on the content of their experiences, highlighting the potential for scalable early detection tools.
A Stanford University study suggests that the way children describe difficult or stressful experiences may be a better sign of later mental health risk than the subject matter of what they say. Reported by Euronews, the findings add to growing evidence that speech and language can offer an early window on anxiety and depression, long before a formal diagnosis is made.
The researchers interviewed more than 200 children aged nine to 13 about stressful events they had lived through, then used artificial intelligence tools to analyse their language. According to the study, children whose speech was more complex and more absolute, using words such as “always” and “never”, were more likely to go on to develop anxiety or depression. By contrast, children who used more third-person references, suggesting more focus on other people, were less likely to face later mental health problems.
The content of the stories mattered too, but mainly as a marker of current symptoms rather than a stronger predictor of what might happen next. Stories centred on conflict, fear and violence were associated with higher risk, while accounts involving play, hobbies and ordinary daily routines tended to correlate with lower risk. The authors argued that what children reveal in language is not just what happened to them, but also how they organise those experiences mentally.
Lead author Chase Antonacci said the research offered strong evidence that scalable tools could be developed to spot signs of risk before a diagnosis is made. Senior author Ian Gotlib said speech is relatively easy to analyse, widely accessible and may prove more predictive of later mental health problems than any single other factor. The findings fit with broader Stanford work and other research suggesting that language, brain connectivity and biological markers can all help identify vulnerable children earlier, although reviewers of related studies have stressed that more long-term, externally validated research is still needed.
