New research challenges the idea that children from tougher backgrounds simply develop more slowly, revealing that pressure may hasten certain brain connections, yet impair cognitive functions, with notable sex-based differences.
New research is challenging the common assumption that children from harder backgrounds simply develop more slowly. A study published in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, drawing on data from more than 8,000 children aged 9 to 10 in the US ABCD project, suggests the brain may instead speed up certain connections under pressure, creating a form of accelerated adaptation that looks mature on scans but does not necessarily support stronger thinking skills.
Researchers at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto found that children from less advantaged homes often showed more advanced-looking brain connectivity than peers raised in more secure circumstances. But that apparent maturity came with a cost: those same children tended to perform worse on measures of memory, attention and concentration. The findings fit with wider research on toxic stress, which shows that prolonged adversity can alter developing brain circuits involved in learning, memory and stress regulation, according to Harvard Graduate School of Education and NSPCC Learning.
The study also points to a striking pattern in how social inequality maps on to the brain. Differences seen at first between racial groups largely disappeared once the researchers controlled for socio-economic status, suggesting that what looked like a racial divide was better explained by unequal access to resources, education and stability. That interpretation is consistent with broader research showing that early adversity, rather than race itself, is often the real driver of developmental gaps.
Where the findings become more distinctive is in sex differences. The same environmental pressures did not affect boys and girls in the same way. For boys, the structure of the household seemed to matter most: living with two parents was linked to better memory and attention scores. For girls, the brain appeared more sensitive to external social factors, including school engagement, peer support and space to pursue interests. A separate review in Neuropsychopharmacology has also argued that sex differences in the developing brain can emerge during childhood and should not be ignored in neurodevelopmental research.
The researchers say one possible explanation is timing. At ages 9 to 10, girls may already be entering early hormonal changes that alter how the nervous system responds to the world around it. That remains a hypothesis, not a settled conclusion, because the evidence base is still limited. Even so, the message is clear: siblings growing up in the same household may not be carrying the same experience in their heads. The same stress, the same instability and even the same family crisis can leave different marks depending on sex, development and the support a child receives.
