A new clinical trial demonstrates that personalised, team-based concussion treatment significantly improves recovery rates among children and teenagers with lingering symptoms, signalling a shift away from traditional rest-only protocols.
Researchers have reported that a tailored, team-based approach to concussion care may help children and teenagers recover more quickly when symptoms linger after injury. In a randomised clinical trial published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Vicki Anderson and colleagues studied 158 patients aged eight to 18 who were assessed within 17 days of concussion and then assigned either to the new programme, called Concussion Essentials, or to usual monitoring. The trial found that 62.5% of those who received the targeted treatment were fully recovered within three months, compared with 37% in the usual-care group.
The treatment was designed to match care to each child’s symptoms rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. According to the study, the Concussion Essentials group received personalised education, psychological support and physiotherapy, with treatment continuing for up to eight weeks or until symptoms resolved. Many participants improved before the end of that period, with the researchers reporting that 14.9% had recovered by four weeks and 41.8% by seven weeks. The authors said the findings support “individualized and targeted multimodal treatment” delivered by an integrated multidisciplinary team for young people with persisting post-concussion symptoms.
The results add weight to a broader shift in concussion management away from simple rest and watchful waiting. Earlier research and consensus guidance have already argued for collaborative care in children and adolescents whose recovery is prolonged, and a 2020 pilot trial suggested that structured exercise-based rehabilitation could improve symptoms in older teenagers with ongoing problems. The Concussion Essentials study also fits into a line of work showing that recovery from concussion is often fastest when care is started early, before symptoms become entrenched. The researchers noted, however, that this trial relied on parent-reported symptom data rather than the child’s own account, and said they are preparing a separate analysis using self-reported symptoms.
