Finnish study suggests active screen time could boost adolescent cognitive skills

A long-term Finnish study challenges traditional views by linking early childhood screen use with improved teenage cognition, emphasising the importance of active digital activities and balanced lifestyles.

Finnish researchers have added a nuanced twist to the long-running debate over children and screens. An eight-year study linked more screen use from early childhood with better cognitive processing in the teenage years, suggesting that digital time is not automatically harmful and may, in some contexts, support mental development.

The findings, reported by the University of Jyväskylä and picked up by ScienceDaily, point to the kind of screen activity as a key factor. The researchers argue that digital tasks involving learning, creativity, problem-solving or other forms of active engagement are more likely to help than passive viewing. A separate report on the study said the work followed 260 children and found the association at an average age of nearly 16, although the researchers were careful to frame it as a link rather than proof that screens themselves improve intelligence.

The study also reinforces the idea that balance matters. The researchers said screen time should be weighed alongside physical activity, rather than treated as a stand-alone habit. In their view, the most helpful pattern is one that combines movement with screen-based activities that encourage active thinking, a message that challenges the instinct to treat all screen use as a threat to children’s development.
