A long-term Finnish study reveals that children with more cumulative screen time tend to perform better on cognitive tests as teenagers, challenging the notion that screens diminish young minds, and emphasising content and activity types over sheer hours spent online.
Finnish researchers who expected to find evidence that screens were eroding children’s thinking instead saw the opposite: in a long-running study, youngsters with more cumulative screen time tended to perform better on cognitive tests as teenagers. The work, drawn from the PANIC study at the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland, followed 260 children from primary school age to about 16 and measured movement, sitting habits and later brain performance.
The findings, published in Pediatric Exercise Science, do not prove that screens are beneficial. They do, however, challenge the simple idea that more hours on devices automatically translate into weaker attention or poorer memory. Petri Jalanko, the study’s lead author, told Inc. that the strength of the association was unexpected and argued that screen use should not be treated as uniformly harmful.
The more plausible explanation, the researchers say, is that the content and purpose of screen use matter more than the raw number of hours. Active use such as problem-solving, creative work or searching for information may engage learning and memory in ways that passive viewing does not. That fits with other research showing mixed effects: a U.S. study in Computers in Human Behavior linked television and video viewing with lower cognition but found video gaming was associated with better scores, while an Acta Psychologica paper using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study found heavier screen time was tied to poorer cognitive performance and that putamen volume partly explained the link.
The Finnish team also found that physical activity did not map neatly on to brain outcomes. Among girls, more light activity over time was linked to better working memory, while in boys some higher-intensity activity measures were associated with weaker results on certain tasks. The broader literature remains mixed, with other studies connecting screen exposure to shorter sleep, later bedtimes and more psychosocial symptoms in young children. The practical message, researchers say, is not that screens are harmless, but that children need both enough movement and more thoughtful use of the time they spend online.
