A historical natural experiment reveals that British individuals exposed to wartime sugar rationing in childhood tend to face reduced cancer risks and exhibit signs of healthier ageing, highlighting long-term effects of early nutrition.
A new study of people born in Britain in the early 1950s suggests that those who spent their first 1,000 days under post-war sugar rationing went on to face lower risks of several cancers and showed signs of slower biological ageing.
Researchers analysing data from 64,761 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956 found that longer exposure to rationing was associated with lower rates of breast, prostate, liver, rectal and lung cancer later in life. The strongest association was seen for liver cancer, while breast cancer incidence was also notably lower.
The findings build on a rare historical natural experiment. Sugar rationing in Britain ended in September 1953, and consumption rose sharply afterwards, leaving children born only months apart with very different early-life exposure to sugar. Weilong Zhang, an associate professor of economics at the University of Cambridge and a co-author of the research, said that the timing allowed the team to compare people whose diets differed during pregnancy and early childhood, a period when organs, metabolism and the immune system are still developing.
The study also reported biological differences consistent with healthier ageing. People exposed to rationing for longer had longer telomeres, the protective chromosome caps that shorten over time, equivalent to about 2.2 years of slower biological ageing. They also had lower levels of granzyme B, a marker linked to chronic immune activation.
Perhaps most strikingly, the researchers found that early exposure to less sugar appeared to shape later habits as well. Adults who had experienced rationing in early life tended to eat less sugar decades later, around the age of 50, and their overall diets were described as healthier and more varied. The Cambridge team said this points to both biological and behavioural pathways: early nutrition may influence the body’s long-term development, while early taste preferences may persist into adulthood.
The results fit with earlier work using the same historical shift, which has linked greater early-life exposure to rationing with lower risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and stroke. Zhang emphasised that the findings do not mean children should avoid sugar entirely, or that wartime-style rationing would be a sensible policy today, but they do suggest that even modest differences in sugar exposure during a critical developmental window may leave effects that remain visible many years later.
