Albert Heijn launches Hamsterchef to make healthy family meals easier and more engaging for children

Albert Heijn introduces AH Hamsterchef, a new children’s range designed to blend healthier options with familiar flavours and simple preparation, aiming to support families in making better food choices amidst busy schedules.

With the new school year under way, Albert Heijn is trying to make family meals a little easier. The Dutch supermarket says its research found that four in ten parents see getting back into a fixed routine as their biggest challenge, while 84% say healthy food matters for their children. Even so, 54% said convenience often wins on busy days.

The answer, according to Albert Heijn, is AH Hamsterchef, a new children’s range designed to combine healthier options with familiar flavours and simple preparation. The collection includes 17 products for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, all developed with and for children and intended to fit within the Schijf van Vijf, the Dutch dietary guide for healthy eating. Albert Heijn says the line is aimed at families with young children and is meant to make better choices easier to recognise and more appealing on the shelf.

For the evening meal, the range includes fresh pasta dishes and meal kits created specifically for children. Albert Heijn is working with TommyTomato, which provides vegetable-rich school lunches, on those recipes. The supermarket says it will donate €0.25 from each TommyTomato product sold to the company’s Pom-PoenPot fund, which helps expand access to those lunches. Some of the children’s meals already on Albert Heijn’s website, such as organic ratatouille with potatoes for babies from 12 months, show the retailer has been building out this area for some time.

Packaging is also being used as a teaching tool. Each Hamsterchef pack carries an “AHaa-moment”, a small prompt intended to help children learn about taste, ingredients and nutrition. Albert Heijn is also publishing a special edition of Allerhande Kids with recipes and practical ideas for cooking with children, after research suggested that inspiration is another major hurdle for parents trying to serve healthier food. The range is available in all Albert Heijn stores from August, with prices starting at €0.29 and going up to €6.99.
